Gumdo Program in Calgary
Haidong Gumdo, a Korean Sword art, is a modern Korean sword martial art that was started in the early 1980’s. Based on several older Korean Sword styles, it is a complex, beautiful sword art that blends power and speed, with smooth fluid motion.
Haidong Gumdo focuses on combat battlefield patterns of one-versus-multiple opponents…as opposed to some other sword arts which employ techniques geared towards one-on-one or individual combat.
Training is based on individual forms, cutting practice, and strength and flexibility building exercises…using large, circular cuts.
Haidong Gumdo focuses exclusively on training with the sword. Students begin using a wooden practice sword (mokgum) to learn basic techniques, then move on to blunt metal practice swords. Advanced student progress to training with a live blade, when they are ready…usually 2nd Dan Black Belts and above.
Combat sparring is a limited part of the training, with the majority of the time spent practicing sword patterns and cutting techniques.
Minimum Age to join is 12 yrs. No Contract required and Class fees are paid monthly. If you are interested, please feel welcome to drop in and watch, or try out, one of our classes! Please wear comfortable clothes you can work-out in…practice sword will be provided for trying out!
Students are responsible for purchasing a uniform through the school. Practice swords can be purchased through the school, or at any martial arts supply store…they must however, be inspected by an instructor prior to use.
